Septic Tank Risers: A Wise Investment

If you have a septic tank, chances are its buried underground. This means that every time the septic tank needs to be pumped or inspected your yard must be dug up to expose the lids on the tank. Locating and exposing these lids to have your tank pumped or inspected can be a difficult, time-consuming, and costly affair. This is where risers come in handy.

A riser is a large diameter heavy-duty plastic or concrete tube that runs vertically from the septic tank lid openings to the ground/surface. It is covered with either a heavy concrete lid, or in the case of plastic risers, an easily removable lid that is screwed securely into place. These lids are usually installed at or just above grade level for ease of access, but if you prefer to grow grass over the top, they can be buried just below grade.

The cost for risers is dependent on the amount of material you will need (i.e. how deep your tank is buried underground). While the cost is not insignificant, risers typically pay for themselves by the second septic pumping vs. paying to have the lids dug up each time. Septic tanks typically require routine cleaning every 2-5 years. If you plan on staying in your home for longer than 5 years it’s worth considering risers for your septic tank.
